DOLCE & GABBANA DESIGNERS SENTENCED TO JAIL

The judgment has come down in the case against Dolce & Gabbana, and the result is not what the designers would have hoped: They have been found guilty of tax evasion and sentenced to prison.

WWD is reporting that Italian judge Judge Antonella Brambilla has ruled that designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana will serve one year and eight months in jail for tax evasion. (Depending on how that jail time would span, it could conceivably cover at least four major fashion seasons).

The prosecution had initially requested that the designers each serve two and a half years, while also requesting time for Domenico's brother and board member Alfonso Dolce, board member and general director Cristiana Ruella, and finance director Giuseppe Minoni. Dolce & Gabbana's accountant, Luciano Patelli, may be sentenced to three years as the "main orchestrato of the evasion scheme," per WWD. Charges stem from the 2004 sale of Dolce & Gabbana brands to the Luxembourg-based company Gado Srl, which prosecutors allege was done for the sole purpose of evading Italian taxes.

This jail time is on top of a $440 million fine levied in 2012 related to the same charges. The designers' tax troubles date back to 2010, when they were first slammed with the lawsuit that was initially dropped due to lack of evidence before being reopened by the Italian Supreme Court last year.

Dolce and Gabbana are expected to appeal the decision; the Twitter hashtag #freedolceandgabbana has already taken off.

MODEL 101: HOW TO BECOME A MODEL

Do I want to be a model
Despite the glamour and hype you have seen about the modeling profession, it's hard work. It's boring (sometimes) and it can be tedious. Prepared to be constantly rejected, get ready for some major ups and downs. Modelling is a lifestyle, not an 9-5 job. Not all jobs pay well. Unless you are seriously committed about modeling, willing to work at it on your own time, live a healthy life style, etc., you will not succeed as a model.
You have to understand that there are lots of other people who want to be models, it's a very competitive business. Are you willing to put the time and energy into competing with pretty much everyone you meet, 24 hrs a day?
Where do I start
You'll need a modeling portfolio, I'm sure you'll all know what one of those is but for those that don't it's basically a selection of pictures showing yourself in different outfits and poses. The standard size for the photos is 9 by 12 inches and you'll need around 10 - 12 photos. Make sure you focus on quality rather than quantity, remember, you're only as good as your worst photo. Make sure your portfolio has a selection of both head shots and full body shots. Make sure you get a variety of different looks such as swimwear, catalogue and lingerie, you get the idea, also get a couple of black and white shots in there. Avoid using pictures of the same shot.
It can be very advantageous to have photographs from different photographers in a portfolio. This will show the versatility in terms of styles and it will prove that a model can work with a variety of different people. Obviously, the cost of hiring different photographers for a portfolio is prohibitive, but there are many excellent photographers out there who will do prints for time - and of course many more bad ones. If you research what's on offer well, it can be an excellent alternative.
Before going ahead with a photo session ask to look at the photographers portfolio to see if you like his style of photography. No doubt if you go to the photographers studio to book the appointment he will have examples of his work on display anyway. If you've never done modelling before this will also be an excellent practice run for you. Avoid photographers wanting to take nude shots, if possible take a friend with you to the shoot.
The Comp Card
You'll definately need one of these. A comp card is what your modelling agency will use to market you.
What is a comp card? A composite card (sometimes called a ZED) is a model's business card. In most cases, your comp card is your one and only opportunity to make a good first impression. With that in mind it is important that the images on your card are your absolute best and nothing less. Additionally, the printing and reproduction quality is extremely important. Poor reproduction makes your images look bad and as a result - makes you look bad. Besides a great head-shot, the comp card will have other photos that show your experience, your versatility, range, and what type of work you are seeking. For best results all of the photos should be the highest quality you can obtain at your stage in your modeling career. Make sure the you have them printed on rigid card that will withstand a bit of wear and tear.
Be careful! Do NOT have a modeling agency print your comp card. If you do - they will put their logo on it. You are going to want to sign with as many agencies as possible if you are serious about getting work. Comp card printing can get expensive - print them yourself and give each agency copies - they have stickers that they can put on them with their contact information and you will save money.
The Agency
An agency or co-ordinator should represent models. The model must have a portfolio, and comp cards. The agency/coordinator provides you with work (That is their main purpose. It is safe to say that they work for you!) They make a commission on your fee.
GOLDEN RULE - Don't go with an agency who asks for money up front! You'll probably never hear from them again and I ceratainly doubt you'll ever get any work from them.
Also check to see if they are reputable and genuine. The agency/coordinator provides you with a safe working environment and looks after legalities of the paper work for the job. They provide their clients with "Professional" models. Keep copies of all-important papers, such as contracts etc. You may need these if you have a dispute with the agency/coordinator. It is wise to choose the agency/coordinator carefully so you can stay with that them.
How do I approach an agency?
The oldest way to go about it is to visit them. Book an appointment ahead of time by phone. Bring at least 2 pictures. They don't have to be professional pictures. A head shot, natural and clear. Also a full length shot that somewhat reveals your figure, a clingy dress , swimsuit, figure flattering clothes or other tight fittings garments should be worn. Forget about baggy clothes! It will tip off viewers that you have something to hide. Ask lots of questions. A sk to see what work their models are currently doing? Ask for names and phone number of clients and call them to verify the information, be concerned if they promise you work right away or promise you high salaries. If they don't allow you time to think about it or if they use pressure techniques to sign the contract, be concerned. They should not ask for money up-front for classes or training. Be concerned if the they claim to be looking for ordinary people. Reputed agencies/coordinators might have open interviews during the week, give them a call and find out.
Our Top Ten Modeling tips
1. Always be on time, if you cannot, be let the Photographer know. Punctuality is very important."safety tip": If you are not taking anyone with you to the shoot, let someone know where you are and with whom. And be sure to tell the photographer that someone knows where you are.
2. Always go prepared : ie...clothing changes that you know will fit you. Don't always think that he/she will have everything that is needed for the shoot.
3. Always take your own make-up; even if he/she has told you there will be a make-up artist there. Always think of the could be's.
4. Get references, as many as you can. That would include other models and/or assignments that the photographer has had. Check and double check. And be sure that a legitimate photographer is doing the same with you. Never take anything for granted.
5. Get phone numbers and addresses if possible, if he/she is hesitant. You might want to rethink the shoot.
6. Make sure that you know exactly what the shoot consists of, and never feel pressured to do anything that you do not feel comfortable doing. If nothing else, go by your gut feeling.
7. Always take along enough "cash" for cab fare etc. In case the photographer cannot provide adequate transportation. Most will, but always be prepared for the "just in case".
8. Keep in mind that modeling is a business, not a personal venture. You need to be prepared to negotiate with prospective employers, regarding everything from pay to content. Don't just drop out of contact because you don't like what's offered - either negotiate or say, "Thanks, but no thanks." You never know, the employer you turn down could well have your dream job later - and if you treat him or her rudely or with disrespect, you'll likely miss out.
9. Don't ever do anything that you might be sorry for later. What you do today can affect your career later down the road. "If you pose for a photo that you cannot show your family and friends, and be proud of it, it wasn't worth doing". Mainly YOU should be proud of it.
10. If you have a verbal or signed agreement on traveling expenses etc. Make sure that it is followed up on. Written is sometimes the best.

OMG! CAN'T BELIEVE THIS; NIKE OSHINOWO AND DE. SOLEYE'S MARRIAGE COLLAPSES

nike_oshinowo_and_dr__soleye

For the past 6 years Lagos doctor, Tunde Soleye and ex-beauty queen, Nike Oshinowo were a noticeable item on the social scene. This was on account of their high-profile marriage: on the one hand, Dr. Soleye – a popular Lagos socialite, owner of Duro Soleye Hospital in Lagos, which he inherited from his late father; on the other hand, Nike Oshinowo, who enjoyed cover pages of many celebrity magazines. She was also the darling of paparazzi’s for years on account of her beautiful looks and style.
When the news broke 6 years ago that Nike had gotten married to Dr. Soleye, it was shocking to many celebrities. First of all, because he was legally married in Nigeria to his ex-wife Dr. Olufunmilayo Soleye and was romantically linked to another female friend of his who lived in England. To enable Nike enjoy her marriage to him, Soleye divorced his long-time wife Funmi, the mother of his kids.
Now, the marriage is in trouble, and spouses have parted ways. Many people still cannot seem to understand why their marriage crashed so soon.
Last week, Dr Soleye confirmed the fact, but said he and Nike were going to issue a joint press release on their break-up. Nike, on her own, did not reply any of the messages.
That all was not well with their marriage became obvious when the duo began to step out at events separately.
At a party that Dr. Soleye attended alone last week, many of the guests wondered why he no longer steps out with Nike, whom he fondly calls Adenike. He simply told the guests, on enquiry, that they had parted ways.
Insiders say both of them are to blame for the crash of the marriage. Nike’s friends have heaped the blame on Dr. Soleye, who, they say has remained a ladies’ man despite his marriage to Nike. He is alleged to have been close to other women. friends claimed that although Dr. Soleye showered love and affection on her at the early stages, he stopped a few years ago when he began to ignore her.
Friends of Dr. Soleye heaped the blame on Nike who, they said, lives a very extravagant and flamboyant lifestyle which reportedly contributed to the quick depletion of Dr. Soleye’s resources. They claimed that because of the love he had for Nike he spent all he had on Nike, setting up for her a beauty business and funded her Miss Nigeria project for 2 years before she pulled out. Many believe that their marriage may have contributed to the financial squeeze he is currently experiencing.
As if this was not enough, one of the women in Dr. Soleye’s life, who lives in England was said to have out of anger sold one of his prime properties in London so as to deprive Nike of staying there. Since the property is said to have been jointly owned, not only did she sell the property, she was said to have splitted the money into four: partly to offset the mortgage on it; give some to his first wife, some to him and kept some to herself.
As it is now, the crash of the marriage may be giving Nike sleepless nights, but Dr Soleye insists on an amicable separation.

MODEL 101: TYPES OF MODELING

High fashion modeling (also known as editorial modeling)
High fashion modeling is the modeling done in fashion magazines, couture ads, and it is typically what comes to mind when we think of modeling. High Fashion Models are the types of models (or supermodels) you most often see in magazines such as True Love, Passion and Elle and who walk the runway for major fashion designers such as Kaveke, Versace, Gucci, Chanel and others.
Fashion models are generally a minimum of 5' 9" - 6' 0" and start their modeling careers before the age of 21. Their measurements are in the range of 34 - 24 - 34.
Male fashion models are generally 6' 0" - 6' 2" and wear a 40 Regular jacket. These male models should have their careers started before the age of 23 - 25 at the most.
Runway / fashion show modeling
Runway models used to be exotic with long necks and limbs and could have unique facial characteristics whereas print models had perfect facial features and rarely had unique characteristics; they were beautiful in a standard way. In the early 80's, The industry changed forever when the designer Versace began using print models like Cindy Crawford, Stephanie Seymour and others for their runway shows. This was the beginning of the Supermodel Era. Supermodels were models who did it all, from print to runway to television and film. Today to become a Supermodel or a fashion model that earns a substantial income you need to be able to do runway modeling as well as print modeling.
Glamour modeling
Glamour modeling is modeling for photos with a sexual theme, including bikini, sexy outfits and lingerie modeling. This includes photos for calendars, posters, and other pin-up girl products and pictures for the adult entertainment industry with high-end men's magazines like Playboy and then on down to the lower end magazines. These shots are also becoming very popular on the Internet. The glamour industry is huge and top glamour models can make as much as top fashion models. There are no height or size requirements as in fashion modeling. While fashion modeling often requires a very specific thin body type, glamour modeling prefers curves. Fashion often looks for a special or different look while glamour modeling wants traditional drop dead gorgeous; and while fashion really only happens in New York, glamour can happen anywhere.
This field is easy to get started in as there plenty of photographers who would love to do test shoots. Getting into the high paying work can take as much effort as becoming a high fashion model.
Petite modeling / Plus size modeling
It is rare to see petite sized or plus size women in fashion modeling but there are still many opportunities for models in this field. Many stores that focus on petit or plus size clothing want models with that particular body type. Also as in glamour modeling, body size is less important but still requires a pretty face. Plus size models range from a size 10 and up and are generally
5' 8" to 5' 10". Petite models are generally 5' 2" to 5' 6" with good body proportions.
Teen modeling
For products targeting teenagers, companies will want to use teenagers in their ads. There are also many magazines that target teenage girls and that use younger women as their models (typically 13-16 years old). Sometimes older teenagers will make it into fashion or runway modeling. All respectable photographers and magazines will require parental permission prior to working with anyone under the age of 18.
Mature modeling
There are certain products that target certain markets and if that product is for older customers, the company often wants a model that fits this niche market. Mature models are not usually used for fashion or glamour but jobs are available in most other forms of modeling.
Child modeling
Children are used in many types of modeling but primarily for commercial or catalog modeling. It can be difficult for children to do the demanding work that modeling often requires and usually photographers that work with models have to be patient and understanding that children may not be able to express the emotions that are needed for certain shots on demand.
Body part modeling (hair, hand modeling, etc.)
Body part modeling is a special category that belongs in both fashion and commercial modeling. This is the use of just part of the body in a photograph. Sometimes models that look great in full-length shots or headshots don't have nice hands or feet so body part models are used to fix this problem. In such cases, photographers will shoot using the standard model's face but the body part model's hands or feet and make it look as though they are from one person. Usually body part models will specialize in just one part of the body like hands, feet, legs, ears, or neck.
Hand models are the most requested of body part modeling. For women hand models, long slender graceful hand and fingers with smooth, wrinkle-free, clear skin, and very good nails. The ability to pose the hand in a relaxed graceful fashion is also very important.
Commercial modeling
Commercial modeling represents everything that isn't fashion and isn't glamour. It is vast, diverse and the physical requirements can vary greatly. The purpose is to sell a product, service, or idea.
Catalog modeling
Models for catalogs can be anyone depending on the look and products of the catalog. Often they include mature models and children as well as petit and full sized models.
Showroom modeling / Promotional modeling (trade shows)
Some exhibitors at trade shows may hire models to hand out literature at their booths. The idea is that attractive people will sell an idea about the product.
Print advertisements
Depending on the product or service being sold in the advertisement, different types of models will be needed.
Fitness modeling
This type of modeling is specific to magazines and ads that focus on health, fitness or nutrition. Models for fitness modeling require strong, toned bodies.

MODEL 101: GETTING STARTED AND FINDING WORK

There are many ways to get started in a modeling career. Different models have reached success through different routes.
Modeling agencies
The bulk of the work in modeling is booked through Modeling Agencies. Agencies have the necessary contacts and are the best place to start. The best way to approach agencies is to go to the front door of the modeling agency. You can approach a modeling agency through their open call, schedule an interview or by submitting a cover letter and photographs. It is also a good idea to give them a call or email them and ask how they want new talent to contact them since each modeling agency may have different submission requirements. There is a list of the top modeling agencies on this site that you can contact to submit your portfolio, pictures and information. If they see potential talent, they may contact you.
Fate
Modeling agencies are constantly looking for new talent, particularly in fashion modeling. This can be modeling agencies' personnel, photographers, art directors, and model scouts. Some agencies are large enough to employ staff that are just out looking for new faces and potential talent. There are numerous stories of models being discovered at the mall, on the beach, or other public place but since there are many scam model scouts it's normal to be somewhat suspicious of them. (Read tips on how to avoid modeling scams to know what to look for). If you are serious about modeling, waiting to be discovered on the street is not the best approach, however, being seen at certain types of events or parties where you think model scouts would hang out couldn't hurt.
Hard work
Some models put together portfolios, study and practice being a model by working on their expressions, posing, runway walking, hair styling, make up, working in front of a camera, and how the business works. Starting out by getting small contract jobs and doing commercial modeling and hoping to be discovered. If you enjoy the process of modeling then all of the time and expense that go into this process can be its own reward. If you want to be a high fashion model and do not have the size or look requirements, no amount of hard work will make you a career model.
This area can also include attending modeling school, modeling camps, model searches, Internet listing services, modeling contest, modeling conventions, and pageants, which can often be very expensive. These activities can be interesting, educational and fun but most of these organizations will take on and take money from almost anyone who wants to be a model. This leads to a very low percentage of career models who actually come from these activities.

Model searches
Many agencies will advertise a model search event claiming that scouts from all over the world are going to attend. This may be the case but be wary. In every big city there are always a few model searches each year. They are a good opportunity to meet people from agencies in person if you can't afford to go to New York. There are also national and international searches that seem more legitimate and have more success stories.
Modeling contests
Modeling contests can be local competitions in your town to international events. There are the well-known “Miss America/Miss Universe” pageants but there are also contests that are organized by modeling schools or agencies. Contests are slightly different from model searches because contests include stage events such as walking, posing, dressing in different styles of clothing and often can include a talent portion, whereas model searches are typically an opportunity to meet agency employees or a call for submission of pictures.
The Internet
Developing your own webpage can increase your chances of being discovered. Just like some models have been discovered on the street of a small town, a top model scout could find you while he or she is browsing the Internet. In today's society you have to be creative in order to get the attention you want and consider new options in approaching the career of your choice. If you want to be a model, the most important part is being seen and what better place than the Internet?
Many photographers have also said they browse the internet looking for new ideas, new poses, new colours as well as new faces. If you have interesting new ideas and post them on your webpage then there is a chance you will be recognized by a photographer that may want to use you for his or her own portfolio.
Webpages also provide an opportunity for making money. There are plenty of collectors out there willing to pay for good photos. If you already have a number of shots, it is easy to have a webpage created and post these on your site. Although many of these collectors may not be connected to the modeling business, you never know who may see your pictures.
The most important aspect of a webpage is to ensure that your contact information is always up to date.

How to apply for modeling jobs
Although each agency may have different submission requirements, all of them need to see pictures. The best way to get into the business is to create a portfolio and send it out to as many agencies as you can. Most have similar photo submission requirements (usually a head shot and a few body shots) so it is just a matter of getting good photographs and making plenty of copies.

MICHELLE OBAMA'S NEW HAIRSTYLE: HIT OR MISS?

New birthday, new presidential term … new ‘do for First Lady Michelle Obama!

The POTUS’ wife debuted the look – straight, shoulder-length hair with bangs and some face-framing fringe – on Thursday (her 49th birthday) in a photo she posted on her new Twitter account. Mrs. Obama, who normally sports a sleek style with a side part or a swept back look, also donned a red-and-pink Zac Posen creation in the shot, a candid of her chatting with Inaugural citizen co-chair David Hall about Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

And the people have spoken! The majority of those who replied to @FLOTUS on Twitter voted that the new look was quite an improvement with more than 300 retweets and favorites. “Happy Birthday, and great hair,” tweeted ‏@lea_artz.

Monday, of course, will also be busy for the First Family since it’s the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Nearly 800,000 people are expected to descend upon Washington, D.C.’s National Mall to watch him be sworn in for his second term. Also on hand for the festivities will be Beyonce, who will sing the national anthem, and Kelly Clarkson, who will serenade the president and first lady with "My Country 'Tis of Thee.”

Wonder what will Michelle will wear to the Inauguration to go with those new bangs?
